East Rockaway
About East Rockaway
The village began as "Near Rockaway", a shipping and trading center whose deep inland channels made it useful to ships, and took the name East Rockaway in 1869. It incorporated in 1900. The Haviland-Davison Grist Mill in Memorial Park — built under a 1688 land grant on the Mill River — was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
The LIRR's Long Beach Branch stops twice in the village, at East Rockaway and Centre Avenue.
Garage Doors by the Water
On the streets nearest the river and the bay, damp salt air works on every steel part of a garage door. We see:
- bottom brackets rusted thin and cables fraying where they attach;
- steel rollers seized solid;
- spring coils pitted with rust and breaking early;
- photo-eye brackets corroding and drifting out of line.
Galvanized cable, coated hardware and sealed nylon rollers last noticeably longer here.

Local notes
A Simple Salt-Air Routine
- Rinse the hardware at the bottom of the door with fresh water a few times a year, and after storms.
- Keep springs, hinges and bearings lightly lubricated.
- Replace a torn bottom seal so water does not sit in the corners.
- Have the door checked once a year.

Springs That Break Early Near the River
A spring's rated life assumes clean steel. Rust pits on the coils become weak points, and on damp, salty streets springs often fail well before their cycle count. If you live near the Mill River and your springs are visibly rusty, it is worth replacing them on your schedule rather than on a winter morning. One spring starts at $269, a matched pair at $485.
Openers and Damp Garages
Moisture works on the opener too: sensor brackets rust and drift, wiring connections corrode, and logic boards suffer when power surges come with summer storms. If the door has started closing and then reversing for no clear reason, the sensors are the first thing to check — realignment starts at $85, a new board at $179.
