How springs work
The Physics of Torsion vs. Extension Counterbalance Systems
The spring, not the opener, is what lifts a garage door. A typical residential door weighs somewhere between 150 and 300 pounds; the spring is wound to carry almost all of that, so the door feels light and the opener only has to steer it. When the spring breaks, all of the weight comes back at once.
Torsion springs sit on a steel shaft above the door. Closing the door twists them tighter; opening lets them unwind and turn the cable drums at each end of the shaft. Most doors installed in the last few decades use them.
Extension springs run front-to-back above the horizontal tracks and stretch as the door closes. They are common on older and lighter doors — including many of the detached garages behind Rockville Centre's pre-war houses. Each one must have a safety cable running through it, so a spring that snaps cannot whip across the garage.
Symptoms of a Broken Garage Door Spring
- A sharp bang from the garage, often early on a cold morning.
- A gap of two or three inches in the coil on the bar above the door.
- The opener lifts the door a few inches, then stops or reverses.
- With the release cord pulled, the door is too heavy to lift by hand.
- One or both cables hanging slack off their drums.
- On extension springs: one spring stretched and limp, or missing from its pulley.
Do not keep pressing the button. An opener lifting a door with no spring strips its drive gear within a few tries, turning a spring repair into a spring-and-opener repair.

Standard or high-cycle?
Count the trips: school, work, errands, the dog. A door used two or three times a day does fine on standard springs. If the garage is the family's front door, high-cycle springs usually save the next replacement.
We will tell you which fits your house — not the more expensive one by default.
Doing it right
Why DIY Spring Replacement Is Extremely Hazardous
A wound torsion spring holds enough energy to lift the door it is attached to. Winding one means inserting steel bars into a cone and turning against that force a quarter turn at a time. If a screwdriver or the wrong-size rod slips, the bar spins with the spring, and hands, wrists and faces are what get in the way.
The same goes for the bottom brackets: they look like a couple of bolts at the floor, but they hold the cable that carries the spring's force. Loosen them under tension and they let go.
We use proper winding bars, clamp the door before releasing anything, and check the balance at the end with the opener disconnected.
Oil-Tempered Springs and Nassau County Winters
Builder-grade springs are often rated around 10,000 cycles. In a damp South Shore garage, rust also forms between the tightly wound coils, adding friction and weak spots, which is part of why springs here tend to fail on the first hard-freeze mornings.
We install oil-tempered springs and size each one by wire diameter, inside diameter and length to the door it is going on. That matters in Rockville Centre more than most places: older wood doors, doors with added insulation, and doors repainted over the years can all weigh more than the springs on their tags were chosen for.

Spring Repair Questions
Answers as of October 2026. Still unsure? Call (516) 442-8171 and describe what the door is doing.
How much does it cost to replace a garage door spring in Rockville Centre?
A single torsion spring starts at $269 and a matched pair at $485. High-cycle springs for a heavily used door start at $535 a pair, and extension springs with safety cables at $320. Every spring job includes balancing the door and checking the drums, cables and bearings.
Should I replace both garage door springs at the same time?
On a two-spring door, almost always. Both springs went in on the same day and have made exactly the same number of trips, so when one breaks the other is usually close behind. One visit for both costs less than two separate calls.
How do I know if my garage door spring is broken?
Look at the bar above the closed door: a broken torsion spring shows a clear gap of an inch or more in the coils. Other signs are a loud bang, an opener that lifts the door a few inches and stops, and cables hanging loose beside the door.
How long do garage door springs last?
Standard springs are commonly rated around 10,000 open-and-close cycles. At four or five trips a day that can be well under ten years. High-cycle springs use a longer or heavier coil so each cycle stresses the steel less.
Can you convert old extension springs to torsion springs?
Yes. Many older detached garages in the village still run on extension springs along the side tracks. A full conversion to a torsion system starts at $585 and makes the door smoother and safer.
