Garage Door Tune-Up & Noisy Door Repair

Most broken springs and snapped cables give warnings first — a heavier door, a new squeal, a frayed strand. A tune-up catches them on a quiet weekday instead of an emergency morning, and takes most of the noise out of the door while we are there. Tune-ups start at $119.

  • Tune-up from $119
  • Quiet rollers from $179
  • Safety tests included

Maintenance

What We Do on a Tune-Up

  1. Balance test. Opener disconnected, door lifted to waist height. It should stay there.
  2. Springs. Rust, gaps, binding coils, correct size for the door.
  3. Cables and drums. Fraying at the bottom brackets, even wrap on both drums.
  4. Rollers and hinges. Wobble, flat spots, cracked hinges.
  5. Track and fasteners. Alignment, loose lag screws, bent sections.
  6. Lubrication. Springs, bearings, hinges and roller bearings.
  7. Opener. Force and travel, chain or belt tension, sensor alignment, auto-reverse test.
  8. Seals. Bottom seal and side weatherstripping.

Quieting a Garage Under Living Space

In split-levels and post-war ranches around the village, the garage often shares a wall or ceiling with a bedroom or den. Noise comes from three places, and we work through them cheapest-first:

The door. Old steel rollers, dry hinges and loose hardware cause most of the racket. Nylon rollers and a proper lubrication cut it dramatically.

The opener. A loose chain slaps the rail; a worn trolley clunks. Tightening and adjusting help, and a belt-drive or wall-mount opener solves it.

The mounting. Rubber isolators between the opener's hangers and the joists keep vibration out of the floor above.

Our guide: quiet openers for rooms over the garage.

Between visits

Homeowner Checks Between Visits

  • Once a month, lay a roll of paper towels under the door and close it. It must reverse.
  • Wave a broom handle through the sensor beam while the door closes. It must stop and reverse.
  • Look at the spring above the door for gaps or heavy rust.
  • Look at the cables at the bottom corners for broken strands.
  • Keep the threshold clear of leaves and ice.

When a Noise Means Stop

Stop using the door after a sudden bang followed by a door that will not lift, a scraping sound with the door going crooked, or a snapping sound from the side of the door. Those are a spring, a roller leaving the track and a cable fraying — not tune-up jobs.

Best Time of Year for a Tune-Up

Fall. Cold weather is when worn springs break and frozen seals strip opener gears, so a check in October or November catches problems while they are still cheap. Homes near the water benefit from a second look in spring, after a winter of salt.

Tune-Up vs. Repair

A tune-up keeps a working door working. If we find a part that has already failed — a cracked hinge, a frayed cable, a spring with a gap — we stop, show you, and give a written price before replacing it. Nothing is swapped without your say-so.

Tune-Up Questions

Answers as of October 2026. Still unsure? Call (516) 442-8171 and describe what the door is doing.

What is included in a garage door tune-up?

Lubrication of springs, bearings, hinges and rollers; tightening of track and hinge hardware; a balance test with the opener disconnected; opener force, travel and sensor checks; and a written note of anything worn. It starts at $119.

How often should a garage door be serviced?

Once a year for most homes, and before winter if the door is more than a few years old. Doors used as the main entrance to the house benefit from a check every six months.

How do I stop my garage door from being so noisy?

Start with lubrication and tightening. If the door still rumbles, old steel rollers are usually the cause; a full set of sealed-bearing nylon rollers starts at $179. If the opener itself is loud, a belt-drive or wall-mount opener solves it.

What lubricant should I use on a garage door?

A silicone or lithium spray made for garage doors, on the hinge pivots, roller bearings, springs and end bearings. Do not grease the inside of the tracks — it collects grit.

Door stuck? Call and describe it.

A local technician with the common springs, cables and opener parts on the truck — and the price in writing before work starts.
