Sections

How a Sectional Door Is Put Together

A residential door is four or five horizontal sections joined by hinges, each with rollers at both ends. The bottom section carries the brackets that the lift cables hook into. That design lets the door curve up into the garage — and it is why one damaged section can often be swapped without replacing the whole door.

The bottom section takes the most abuse: bumpers, snow shovels, bins, and the water that sits at the threshold. On older steel doors it is usually the first to rust through; on wood doors, the first to rot.

When One Section Is Enough — and When It Is Not

Replace a section when only one is damaged, the model is current, and the rest of the door and its springs are sound.

Choose a new door when two or more sections are damaged, the model is discontinued, the door is a thin uninsulated skin you would like to upgrade anyway, or the wood is soft in several places.

Prices

Prices for Impact Damage

Repairs around a damaged section
WorkStarting at

Track section replacement$199

Replacement sections are priced per door once the model is confirmed, because they vary by maker, size and design.

These are starting rates for a typical residential door. Size, weight, parts and access move the number up; you see the written figure before anything is unbolted. The $45 diagnostic visit is waived when you go ahead with the repair, and Sunday visits add $69.

After the hit

Dents, Rust and Rot We See Locally

Thin steel doors from earlier decades dent easily; an insulated, steel-backed door is far stiffer.

Rust at the bottom where driveways slope toward the garage and water sits against the door.

Wood doors on older colonials and Tudors, where the bottom section softens first. Sometimes a carpenter can rebuild it; often a carriage-house replacement keeps the look with less upkeep.

What We Check After an Impact

  • Rollers on the struck side still seated in the track.
  • Vertical track plumb and its brackets tight.
  • Hinges on either side of the bent section not cracked.
  • Bottom bracket and cable sound if the bottom section was hit.
  • Door balance and opener force afterward.

Finding Your Door's Model

Most doors carry a label on the inside of a section or on an end stile with the maker and model, sometimes a date. We photograph it, measure the width and section height, and note the panel design, color and window pattern. That is what the manufacturer needs to confirm whether the section is still produced.

How Long It Takes

One visit to measure and confirm, a wait while the section is ordered, then a second visit of a couple of hours to swap it: the door is clamped, the springs unwound, the section and its hinges replaced, and the door re-balanced and tested.

Panel Questions

Answers as of October 2026. Still unsure? Call (516) 442-8171 and describe what the door is doing.

Can you replace just one garage door panel?

When the manufacturer still makes that section in your door's size, style and color, yes — we replace only the damaged section. On older or discontinued doors a match may not exist, and we price a new door next to the repair.

Can a dented garage door be fixed without replacing it?

Small shallow dents in steel can sometimes be eased out, but steel stretches when it dents, so it rarely looks perfect. A crease across the section or a bent end stile means a new section.

Is it safe to use a garage door after a car hits it?

Only if it still runs straight and smoothly. If rollers are out of the track, a cable is slack or the door looks crooked, do not run it — unplug the opener and call.

Will a new section match the rest of my door?

The panel design will match if the model is current; the color can differ slightly because the old door has faded. We tell you honestly how close it will be before ordering.
