Repair or Replace an Older Garage Door?

Many Rockville Centre garages are on their second or third door. When something breaks, it is fair to ask whether to fix it again or start over. Here is how we think it through with customers.

  • Real numbers
  • No pressure
  • Both options priced

Guide

By the Rockville Centre Garage Door team · over 20 years of garage door work · Updated October 2026

Repair Makes Sense When

  • The sections are straight, with no rust-through or rot.
  • The problem is a moving part: springs, cables, rollers, hinges, opener, seal.
  • You like how the door looks.
  • The repair is a small fraction of a new door's price.

Replacement Makes Sense When

  • Two or more sections are damaged, or a car bent the door and the tracks.
  • Steel has rusted through at the bottom, or wood is soft in several places.
  • Sections or parts for the model are no longer made.
  • It is a thin uninsulated door on an attached garage you want warmer and quieter.
  • It is an old one-piece tilt-up door that swings out over the driveway.

A Rule of Thumb

If a repair would cost more than about a third of a comparable new door, compare both. New singles start at $1,560 installed ($1,985 insulated); doubles at $2,510 ($2,960 insulated). Those prices include new tracks, springs and seals, which a repair would not.

Typical Cases

Broken spring on a sound 15-year-old steel door: repair — both springs from $485.

Bottom section rusted through on a thin 30-year-old door, opener tired too: usually a new insulated door and opener.

One section bent by a car, current model: replace the section.

Heavy wood door on a 1920s detached garage, sound but hard to lift: repair — correct springs. See pre-war garages.

Repair or Replace Questions

Answers as of October 2026. Still unsure? Call (516) 442-8171 and describe what the door is doing.

How long do garage doors last?

A well-kept steel door commonly lasts 20 to 30 years, with springs, cables, rollers and openers replaced along the way. Wood doors last as long as their finish and the wood are maintained.

Is a new garage door a good investment?

A new door is one of the most visible changes to the front of a house, and an insulated door makes an attached garage and the rooms next to it more comfortable.

When is a garage door not worth fixing?

When two or more sections are damaged, the steel is rusted through or the wood rotted, parts are no longer made, or the repairs needed now and soon approach a large share of a new door's price.
